Fair Trade Month Recipe by Chef Barton Seaver

National Geographic Fellow, TV show host, cookbook author and celebrity chef Barton Seaver is an influential voice in the culinary world--not only because of his natural talent in the kitchen, but also because of his passion for sustainable foods. He embraces an entirely new kind of casual cooking featuring seafood that hasn’t been overfished or harvested using destructive methods.

The recipe below, created by Barton in honor of Fair Trade Month, features several Fair Trade Certified™ ingredients including Red Coral Jasmine Rice from Alter Eco. Farmers of the Agrarian Cooperative of Surin in eastern Thailand cultivate this Fair Trade Certified rice using traditional methods that ensure quality and respect for the environment. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides have been replaced with organic fertilizers and natural plant extracts to produce this premium quality, environmentally friendly rice.

Yukon River Salmon with Fair Trade Coral Red Jasmine Rice Pilaf

Makes: 4 servings

Ingredients:

4 Yukon River Salmon, 4 oz fillets each

Salt, to taste

Black Pepper, Frontier Fair Trade, to taste

2 tablespoons Olive Oil, Canaan Fair Trade, plus more for drizzling

1 small Onion, Peeled and Diced

2 cups Red Coral Jasmine Rice, Alter-Eco Fair Trade , Washed and Drained

1⁄2 bunch Fresh Parsley

5 sprigs Fresh Mint

1 clove Nutmeg, Frontier Fair Trade Certified

Step 1

Preheat oven to 275 degrees.

Step 2

For the salmon, season the fillets with salt and pepper and place on a greased baking tray. Place the tray in the oven and cook for approximately 25 minutes per inch of thickness.

Step 3

For the rice, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a sauce pan. Add the diced onion and cook over high heat until translucent.

Step 4

Add the rice and toss to coat in the oil. Toast the rice over high heat for 2-3 minutes stirring constantly until the rice is fragrant. Add 3 1/2 cups water and season with salt. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Cover and allow to cook for about 15 minutes or until the rice is fluffy and all of the water is absorbed. Add the picked herbs and fluff the rice with a fork to incorporate and let rest.

Step 5

To serve, divide the rice amongst plates and place the salmon fillets on top. Drizzle the plates with a thin stream of olive oil. Grate a few strokes of the nutmeg over the top of the salmon and around the plate. Serve immediately.

FTUSA withdrawals from Fairtrade International (FLO)

The 3 major producer networks (representing 800 producers groups comprised of around 1 million producers in 60 countries) in Fair Trade certification, issued statements this week strongly opposing Fair Trade USA’s decision to withdraw from Fairtrade International (FLO), and to FTUSA doing so without consulting the 3 networks, all co-owners of FLO.In addition, the Latin America network, CLAC, and its coffee subgroup, Red Café, went further to strongly oppose FTUSA’s strategy to expand certification for hired labor in coffee and other product areas in Latin America. More, CLAC and Red Café urge that the current flux in Fair Trade be used to have FLO reconsider its current policies of allowing plantations and contract labor in some products (bananas, tea, flowers, etc.) in Latin America, to allow only small producers self-organized to participate in FLO.

Small Producers Authorize First Certifier to Use New Symbol / Label

FUNDEPPO, the Foundation of Organized Small Producers, announced this week that they have taken several key steps to implement a seal that identifies Fair Trade products from small producers' organizations. The seal, or symbol, shown above, is a central part of FUNDEPPO's struggle to support small producers' organizations interested in a fairer and more sustainable world, now increasingly controlled by large scale businesses and values of domination and exploitation.FUNDEPPO, formed by the Latin American Fair Trade Producers organization, CLAC, in July authorized Mexican Certification Agency for Ecological Products and Processes (CERTIMEX) as its first certifier for the symbol. FUNDEPPO is also seeking other certification bodies for the symbol. Twelve small producer organizations, in six countries, have already been certified. FUNDEPPO also registers buyers interesting in participating in their program, and reports that Just Us! Coffee in Canada, and Ethiquable of France, have recently registered.

FUNDEPPO has its own Board, Standards Committee, and communication process with CLAC. FUNDEPPO has held events in the US (at Specialty Coffee Association of America conference) in April, in West Africa in May, and in Ecuador, Guatemala and Canada in June, to build support for the initiative. In October 2011 FUNDEPPO plans to host the first international conference on the small producer symbol.

I love Spring/Summer fashions the most. I am a big fan of rich, vibrant colors that reflect our world and am thrilled at this season's bold choices. We see embellishments on handbags and bracelets, the belt purse/crossover body bag gets a much needed make over, and good news we don't have to choose between the preppy or boho look, but can float between the two depending on our mood. So get ready to add some color to your life and remember fashion is fun so take a chance this season and express yourself!

Belt purse/crossover body bag - Belt purses have long been the object of ridicule, but not this season. Designers have taken this once mocked accessory and given it a major fashion overhaul with new designs, materials and various sizing. The crossover body bag has been around for years and from what I've seen in stores and on the runway the overall design, colors and compactness is the perfect travel accessory.

Stripes - Nautical inspired horizontal stripes in one solid color or various colors are found in most handbags this season so if a horizontal striped shirt isn't your thing you can still get in on this theme with a beautiful handbag.

Bohemian Inspired - In keeping with the bohemian spirit, you can choose from an array of leather bracelets and handbags with such detailing as grommets, eyelets, buckles and top stitching.

Long Earrings - are back and more stunning than ever. I have never owned a pair, but maybe it's because I am older and more confident that I now love and can appreciate the elegant and sexy look it achieves by just brushing the shoulder and/or collar bone.

Indian Influence - We've seen this trend before but it never seems to go out of style. This season filigree detailing is combined with eye popping colors.

Embellished Wrap Bracelets - Colorful fabric is intertwined with gold and silver to create a fun and festive look.

Earth Tones - This season we see clutches and handbags made from materials found in nature, including jute and raffia. Also look for metallic accents to accentuate the look.

Bright, Block Colors - As we see in clothing we also see these bright block or geometric shaped colors infused together in handbags and jewelry. To pull this style off wear a solid colored top and pant then coordinate your multi-colored block bracelet, earrings and necklace making these accessories your focal point.

Cat eye sunglasses - If you love the look of the 50's and 60's here's your chance to capture a little bit by wearing the infamous cat eye sunglasses. Here's to times gone by.

Is the White House ready for the Fair Trade committment?

There is a new campaign that started in February 2009 by the company Anti-body, an all natural fair trade body care company, in the efforts to bring more awareness of fair trade to the American consumer. The invitation to the First Lady was was unsealed on May 29, 2009.

These efforts are very exciting since fair trade isn't as well known in the United States as it is in Europe, but with the First Lady's endorsement more American citizens will become aware of the many benefits of fair trade and various merchandise wholesalers and retailers have to offer.

Below are the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Who? We are a grass-roots, nonpartisan coalition of fair trade organizations, vendors, retailers, schools, individuals and consumers.

What? Invite the First Lady to join the fair trade movement and declare the White House a “Fair Trade Home” which means integrating fair trade products into your regular buying habits.

Why? Having the White House seek to purchase and use fair trade goods encourages households throughout America to refine their buying habits toward ethical consumption so that poverty, both in America and around the world, is reduced through fair jobs.

Where? We are seeking an endorsement by the First Lady to be celebrated through a vendor gift bag exchange which will be given to the First Lady and her staff by key voices in the fair trade movement.

When? The Public Invitation was unsealed on May 29, 2009. Throughout the summer we are seeking online signatures from consumers and organizations to show the First Lady the momentum and support of the fair trade movement. We hope the First Lady will accept our invitation by the fall so that we can conduct a ceremony in May, 2010 in honor of “World Fair Trade Day”.

Fall Colors Aren't Fading

In the heat of summer I am already looking at the fall colors and couldn't be more excited.

We see the economy reflected in the vibrant color palettes that are designed to attract consumer’s attention and add some much needed color to our wardrobes on those gray and cold winter days. Deep, rich and warm colors pair nicely with the neutral palettes of Iron, Creme Brulee and Nomad. This fall, shops will be lined with clothing and accessories in rich reds, purples, roses, navy blues, rose/peach combos, honey yellows and olive greens. Although this summer showcased more greens and blues, this fall we see only Majolica Blue mixed in with more warm colors. And to this I say, bring it on, Winter! I'm ready.

Which One is Fair Trade?

Can you tell which hobo handbag is fair trade and which one isn't? I saw this handbag while shopping one day and immediately began comparing it to the new Mountain Bag I started carrying for the Spring/Summer season.

Both are made out of quality leather, have a cotton lining, an inside zip pocket, and magnetic closure, but the one distinctive difference is that one bag is made from imperfect cow hides that would otherwise be discarded. The fair trade and environmentally friendly company purchases the imperfect hides which sometimes display branding and natural scarring then turn them into one-of-a-kind handbags.

In keeping up with the latest fashion and fair trade trends I thought it would be fun to introduce a regular blog series that compares fair trade accessories to traditional, or non-fair trade, fashion accessories.

While I'm out shopping around I often peruse department store's handbag, scarf and jewelry sections to get a sense of what styles and fashion trends are emerging. The best part is I can usually locate a fair trade equivilent that I can offer to my customers. This is where fashion and fair trade unite!

When I first heard of a company that was suppose to support women entrepreneurs reach the million dollar mark it seemed too good to be true. I was a young entrepreneur who had spent money on advertising campaigns that proved to be...useless, so you can understand I was a little apprehensive to join their M3 race.

Green America and Partners for Just Trade invite you to celebrate World Fair Trade Day with artisans Evangelina Pizarro and Ayde Riveros.

For the first time these artisans will travel from Peru to share their stories of how Fair Trade has radically changed their lives. On their US tour – Resonating Change: Connecting Communities Through Fair Trade – Ms. Pizarro and Ms. Riveros will give first hand accounts of how the purchase of Fair Trade products directly improves the lives of farmers and artisans in the global south. The tour will travel throughout Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois during the first three weeks of May 2009.

The stories of Evangelina Pizarro and Ayde Riveros represent those of so many women around the world. Both were forced to leaving their homes in search of a better life -- to try to earn more money or escape violence –- yet still experienced great hardship. Through Fair Trade they found a way forward. By crafting and exporting jewelry and hand-knit toys through their own co-op, their quality of life has increased dramatically. 1. Metallics – Looks like metallics are here to stay and have become a staple piece in our everyday wardrobes.
2. Bangle bracelets – The trick is to layer the look, mix and match small, medium and large bracelets. Colors vary, so I say anything goes.
3. Bright and colorful statement pieces – Handbags. Who says your clothes have to have all the attention? A little pop of color from a clutch can go a long way.
4. Big, oversized jewelry – All you need is one statement piece, be it either a necklace or dangling earrings.
5. Bright whites – White is seen from clothing to handbags. It’s the classic, crisp, clean look that is quintessential summer.
6. Fringe – We saw this trend this past fall and it has managed to stay through spring. Who knows maybe it’s reminiscent of better decades?
7. Nude colors – With all these bright and bold colors found in the Spring collections, nude or neutral colors are represented in full force from handbags to high heels.

Spring 2009 Fashion Trends - Colors

As it's snowing outside of my apartment I find myself daydreaming of warmer days and things to come. My mountain bike is resting nicely against my living room wall waiting for Spring to arrive so I can take her for a spin. So since I'm thinking of the near future it seems like the perfect time to address the upcoming Spring 2009 Fashion Trends.

Colors and Prints
Although traditionally muted and darker colors represented depressed times, we can all breathe a sign of relief that designers infused color into their collections.
Go Native! Ethnic/Exotic African/Animal prints, large polka dots and romantic blooms will be all the rage in Spring. So dig through your closet and pull out that leopard print blouse because it's in fashion again.
Romance is in bloom with wisps of delicately brushed colors decorating your tops and skirts.
Polka dots, large and small, are well represented in clothing and handbags this Spring.
Vivid colors
According to the Pantone Color Report (www.pantone.com) the top 10 colors are bright and refreshing. Of course, I am a fan of lemon yellow in the summer. It not only looks awesome against a tan, but it's an instant mood booster. Additionally, we see colors taken from nature, with three variations of green, palace blue (think ocean blue), lavender, rose, and fuchsia red. Neutrals are rose dust, part of the beige family, and slate gray with its bluish-green undertones.
Spicy tones
Spicy, darker tones will be visible in ethnic prints where styles and patterns will vary.

What to wear to a party!
Now that the holiday season has officially begun it's time to RSVP to all those fabulous parties and family gatherings. Your social calendar will be filled up so to save you time and money, we've got some great suggestions to make the most of your accessories this season.

1. Trade With Your Girlfriends
O.k., so you've got the perfect outfit, but have already been seen in your mother's pearls. Remember back in high school when you would swap clothes with your girlfriends? Well now's the perfect time to expand your accessories collection by gathering up your most trusted girlfriends to loan each other some jewelry. Why not make an afternoon of it with some fair trade tea or coffee and some pastries? And wallah, instant wardrobe builder.

2. Invest In Quality Made Merchandise
Costume jewelry is making a comeback, and even though it's known for its inexpensiveness that doesn't mean it has to be made of substandard material. By spending a little extra money you'll get quality jewelry that will outlast and outshine the competition. In the long run, you'll have extra money to spend on other things...like handbags.

3. Recycle & Restyle
What's old is new again. Take your old jewelry, necklaces and bracelets, then mix and match the stones, gems and metals to create a new design and look. Make a trip to your local craft supply store, such as Michaels, and buy a few focal point pieces that will enhance your design. Get creative and, most importantly, have fun.

Before the holiday season takes off and we begin to be bonbarded with advertisements I decided to check out http://www.usps.gov/ to see if they posted their holiday deadline dates. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they revamped their website and it looks fantastic. It's more user-friendly and has a lot more options on the homepage. They've already posted their international and military holiday mail dates which depending on the country are either December 4th or 11th. I know it seems too early to be thinking about the holidays, but if you were like me and were stationed overseas, trust me, it can be a difficult time to be away from family and friends so any Christmas card or present is received joyously.

This is my first time ever blogging and I feel a bit self conscious. Although I've read blogs, I am now ready to enter and contribute to the world of blogging. So here goes...

It seems that October is a busy month. Not only is it Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hispanic Heritage Month (partially in October) and Fair Trade Month, among others, but as I watch the morning shows I am a little disappointed that Fair Trade products haven't been represented this October. Sometimes I see tea and coffee mentioned when green/organic products are showcased and I've seen fair trade chocolate mentioned as an option for Halloween candy, but in particular clothing and accessories have yet to make an appearance. Maybe this holiday season.

With the unstable economy and consumer's purse strings tightened why not make sure that your dollar goes the extra mile and invest in fair trade products? This year fair trade chocolate is everywhere! Your little trick-or-treaters will love to choose from dark chocolate or milk chocolate mini candy bars. They can be purchased from Equal Exchange and Divine Chocolate online or you can search for a local retailer.
